- Usually a paid plan: Agent mode in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude typically sits in the paid tiers (e.g. ChatGPT Plus, Gemini Ultra, Claude Pro). Free versions often remain a plain chatbot without autonomous actions.
- Up-to-date app version: Agent mode is only included in newer app versions. Update the app in the app store before looking for it in the settings.
- Stable internet connection: The agent works in a cloud environment, not locally on the device. Without a stable connection it won't work.
- Plan for usage limits: Even with a plan, agent runs are limited (varies by provider and tier). For large, ongoing tasks, the desktop is often the better choice.
Good to know: you don't need a particularly powerful smartphone – the actual work runs on the provider's servers. Any reasonably recent phone that can install the latest app is enough.

- Update your assistant's app (ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude) to the latest version in the app store – agent mode is only in current versions.
- In the app settings, find and enable agent mode (depending on the app, under “Agent”, “Agent mode” or a similar item) and accept the terms of use.
- Grant only the app permissions you really need. For getting started, access to the built-in browser is often enough.
- Test with a small, clear task (see example prompt) and set the confirmation level so the agent asks before sensitive actions (e.g. purchases).
- Check the result and refine the task if needed. With each round you learn how precisely you need to describe the goal.

Limits: Free agents often have a usage limit and work more slowly on complex tasks. They can get stuck on individual steps – always check the results briefly.

- A paid plan (e.g. ChatGPT Plus, Gemini Ultra or Claude Pro) unlocks higher limits, longer tasks and more app connections.
- In the app settings, selectively enable allowed connections such as calendar, email or task app so the agent can work across apps.
- Turn on a personal memory so the agent remembers your preferences and recurring routines.
- Save recurring routines as a fixed routine – for example a daily morning briefing from your calendar and important emails.
